FloWave Team

Meet the team of experts working at the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility.

  • Dr Thomas Davey is the principal experimental officer of the FloWave facility and the main coordinator for test programmes at the facility. He has an extensive track record in the testing of marine energy devices and has been working as part of FloWave since funding was first granted back in 2010.

  • Professor David Ingram is the Academic Director of FloWave and Professor of Computational Fluid Dynamics at the Institute for Energy Systems. His recent work has included the development of standards and protocols for marine energy systems, including procedures for quality-assured scale testing of devices using both test basins and computational models. He was instrumental in the design of the hydrodynamic systems for FloWave, and is Principal Investigator for a number of EPSRC projects that use the facility.

  • Dr Laura-Beth Jordan is an experimental officer here at FloWave, she has extensive experience in tank test planning and implementation. Laura works with clients all the way from point of contact through planning of test programmes, implementation, running of tests, reporting and analysis.

  • Callum Guy is an experimental officer here at FloWave, he has extensive experience in tank test planning and implementation. Callum works with clients all the way from point of contact through planning of test programmes, implementation, running of tests, reporting and analysis.

  • Martyn Lennon is the engineering technician for the FloWave facility. He is a highly skilled machinist who assists tank test projects, specialising in CNC milling and turning and test model manufacture.

Martyn completed his apprenticeship as a precision engineer at ZOT engineering before joining FloWave in 2015, since then he has worked on many projects assisting in machining of parts for dozens of marine energy device models.

  • Thomas Giles is a test engineer here at FloWave. He has been trained in tank testing and now assists clients in planning and execution of their test programmes. Thomas started out at FloWave as a placement student in 2021 and went on to be hired full-time at FloWave after graduating in 2022. Thomas has a keen interest in marine energy and has completed a MEng integrated master’s degree in mechanical engineering where his final project was on simulation of mechanical moorings.

  • Anita Nunes Leite is an IDCORE student based at FloWave working towards her EngD. The project Anita is undertaking is helping to grow the testing capabilities at FloWave by implementing a recently developed method for simulating wind loads on floating offshore wind turbine models. She is developing a system that can apply dynamic loads to scale wind turbine models in real time using a winch.

  • Ailsa McMillan is an IDCORE student based at FloWave working towards her EngD. As of 2022 Ailsa has just begun her project but is planning to look at how motion induced by loads can affect drivetrain efficiency for floating offshore wind turbines.

Ailsa graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2020 with an integrated masters in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry and joined FloWave in 2022 at the beginning of her second year in the IDCORE program.

  • Katie Smith is an IDCORE student based at FloWave working towards her EngD. As of 2022 Katie has just begun her project but is looking to investigate how hydrodynamic numerical modelling and tank test programmes can be designed and conducted in parallel with specific focus on station-keeping systems for floating offshore renewable energy applications.

Katie graduated with distinction with an MEng in Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics from the University of Strathclyde before joining IDCORE in 2021 and FloWave in 2022.
